Tompkins Cortland Baseball Player Receives National Academic Honor

August 11, 2011

Tompkins Cortland Community College baseball player Dustin Sandberg (Lambrick Park H.S./Victoria, B.C., Canada) has been awarded to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Academic Student-Athlete Award. He was honored with the NJCAA Award for Superior Academic Achievement.

Sandberg is the first Tompkins Cortland baseball player to win the award, which requires a student to have completed at least three semesters of work and maintained a grade point average of at 3.8 while also participating on a varsity team. Sandberg, a recreation leadership major who was also a member of the Phi Theta Kappa international honor society, graduated in May with a GPA of 3.87. This fall he will attend Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa, and play baseball for the Crusaders.

While at Tompkins Cortland, Sandberg excelled both in the classroom and on the playing field. A two-year starter, he was an all-conference selection in 2010 while setting records for home runs, triples, and runs batted in. His career totals are tops in Panthers history in all three of those categories, plus he ranks in the top three for runs scored, doubles, slugging percentage, and total hits.
