Mary Kelly Art Exhibit Opening

April 20, 2017

A special exhibit of paintings is coming to Tompkins Cortland Community College. The College will host a yearlong exhibit of paintings from the “Goddess” series by Mary Kelly. Kelly, who passed away in 2016, was the founding faculty member of the College’s art department. An opening reception for the exhibit is scheduled for Wednesday, April 26 at 5 p.m.

Kelly taught at the College for 26 years, starting in 1974. In addition to teaching, she was a prolific artist and author. She spent many summers researching the images of women in the weavings and paintings of many cultures in Europe, using that research to write several books and influence her paintings. Her work earned international acclaim, and she was granted Professor Emeritus status after her retirement from the College in 2000.

Following her death, Kelly’s family donated several of her paintings to the College, including those that make up the exhibit. The paintings will be on display in a long hallway on the second floor of the College’s main building, just to the south of the library.
