Tompkins Cortland Community College Director of Athletics Mick McDaniel has been honored by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) at its annual awards dinner. McDaniel was given the George E. Killian Award of Excellence, named after the founding executive director of the NJCAA and considered the most prestigious honor presented each year by the national governing body of two-year athletics. The award is given to individuals dedicated to the NJCAA’s ideals of volunteerism, achievement, service, leadership, and excellence. This year’s award carried extra meaning to it as Killian passed away in December of 2017. The presentation was made at the annual dinner in Colorado Springs, Colo.

McDaniel has been a coach of various sports at Tompkins Cortland since 1995 and was named director of athletics in 2000. He has won coach of the year awards in three different sports and currently is the coach of the College’s golf team. He has been active with the NJCAA for over 14 years on both the regional and national levels. After serving as a Region III Director, he was first elected 2nd Vice President of the NJCAA in 2010. He rose through the ranks to 1st Vice President before last year being elected the President of the NJCAA.

Since 1938, the NJCAA has served as the nation’s premier governing body for two-year collegiate athletics, providing athletic and academic opportunities for college students across the globe. The NJCAA is the second-largest national intercollegiate athletic organization in the United States with over 500 member schools in 42 states. Each year, nearly 60,000 student-athletes compete in one of 28 different sports as the organization sponsors 48 national championship events and eight football bowl games. NJCAA Headquarters has been located in Colorado Springs, Colo., since 1985.
