Faculty Present at National Conference

July 18, 2018

Two Tompkins Cortland Community College faculty members presented at a national conference on developmental education recently. Kerry Curran and Eric Jenes were chosen to present at the 2018 Conference on Acceleration in Developmental Education held in Washington, D.C. last month.

Curran, an assistant professor of English, and Jenes, a librarian and coordinator of the College’s Writing Center, offered a presentation titled “The Golden 15 Minute Window of Opportunity: Addressing the Non-Cognitive Issues in the Least Likely of Places.”  The pair discussed with other community college educators how they can use the time between classes to great benefit for students, interacting with them in a way that will promote enhanced learning and better outcomes in the classes.

The conference was organized by the Accelerated Learning Program at the Community College of Baltimore County. The program is designed to help students that need developmental course work by having those students take both developmental and college credit courses during the same semester. The initiative was developed in 2007 and is now used by more than 300 community colleges nationwide.
